The only place where the brand of the bike can be found is on top of the stem. Visible here also is the adjustable front suspension, the chain tubing and the basic foam seat. I’ve upgraded the seat to a more comfortably cushioned option in the meantime.

Next upgrade is a 203mm front disc to replace the current 185mm one, and I’ll be ordering a 60 tooth front ring for greater downhill speed. Gearing is currently at 39/53 in front with a 13t cog in the back, allowing a comfortable speed range between 4 and about 45kph, the 60t option should increase the top end to about 55kph.

Large crowds gather in Thornton Park, Balmain East, to watch the spectacular annual fireworks over Sydney Harbour.

Overseas visitors join the locals in the celebrations, starting from around lunchtime. Some people  have reserved their spot in the early morning of the last day of 2009 – so as to have guaranteed harbour bridge views.

Along the eastern end of Darling street many parties are in full swing, including one at Megan’s house, where we ended up going.

I joined Adam for a flight from Bankstown via Patonga, Palm Beach, Manly, CBD and back again in a Cessna 182. Brought back the wish to get my own licence…

I sometimes get asked what I miss about being away from Switzerland. While some would think I’d miss chocolate, cheese, the mountains or public transport… nothing matters as much as my family.

Sydney’s sky turned red this morning as overnight storms carried masses of dust from inland towards the coast. Waking at six in the morning, I found myself running out the apartment to take a couple of snapshots of the atmosphere. Apparently, even the Bureau of Meteorology does not know when the dust will settle. More pictures after the jump.

Iron Cove bridge is rendered in a reddish haze, similar to fog – except it’s red. Dogs seemed a bit shaken by this experience as well – they seemed quieter, and stayed close to their owners.

Taking the petrol station’s fluorescent light as a reference, one can just imagine how eerie the mood was. Morning traffic was apparently disrupted, although it seemed to flow well on Victoria Rd.
